BASTILLE Project: Accelerating Ireland's Circular Economy

Welcome to the BASTILLE Project

Welcome to the official website of the BASTILLE project – BAtteries: barriers and enablerS To IreLand's circuLar Economy. This ambitious initiative aims to transform Ireland into a leader in circular economy practices, with a particular focus on battery materials such as graphite. Funded by the EPA Research Programme 2030, BASTILLE is dedicated to fostering sustainable innovation and enhancing Ireland’s energy efficiency through cutting-edge research and collaborative efforts.

About BASTILLE

The BASTILLE project seeks to address the critical challenges and opportunities in Ireland’s transition to a circular economy. By examining the technological, regulatory, societal, and supply chain factors that influence the circular economy, we aim to develop comprehensive strategies and recommendations that support the sustainable production and recycling of battery materials. Our research focuses particularly on graphite, a crucial component for electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and hydrogen-based energy solutions.

Project Highlights

Informing Policy: We generate research outputs that guide policymaking in Ireland, facilitating a swift transition to a circular economy. This includes producing an evidence-based implementation roadmap and a policy white paper.

Identifying Barriers and Enablers: By understanding the circularity potential of natural graphite and other materials, we identify the technological, regulatory, and societal factors that can drive or hinder progress.

Developing Roadmaps and Recommendations: Our project creates and validates a roadmap for implementing circular economy principles in Ireland, supported by comprehensive policy guidelines based on case studies.

Engaging Stakeholders: Through surveys, workshops, and interviews, we involve key stakeholders to gather insights and foster collaboration, ensuring that our research addresses real-world challenges and opportunities.

Promoting Sustainability: Our work aims to reduce dependency on imported graphite by boosting local production capacities and promoting sustainable practices, enhancing Ireland’s renewable energy capacity through better energy storage solutions.
